About the Journal

The Online Journal of Research in Islamic Studies (RIS) is a blind, peer-reviewed, and fully open-access academic journal published biannually (June and December) since 2022 by the Academy of Islamic Studies, Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. Prior to this, the journal was published three times per year.

Aims and Scope

The Online Journal of Research in Islamic Studies (RIS) is dedicated to advancing scholarly research grounded in the intellectual, textual, legal, and civilizational traditions of Islam. The journal primarily publishes original research in core areas of Islamic studies, including:

  • Qur’anic and Hadith Studies
  • Islamic Theology
  • Islamic Law (Sharīʿah & Fiqh)
  • Islamic History and Civilization
  • Islamic Ethics and Philosophy

RIS also welcomes contemporary studies that engage with current issues through an Islamic epistemological, ethical, or jurisprudential framework. Manuscripts may be submitted in English, Malay, or Arabic.

About Fees

RIS is committed to the principles of open and equitable scholarly communication. Currently, the journal does not impose any article processing charges (APCs), submission fees, or publication fees at any stage of the review or publication process, ensuring that research dissemination remains accessible to authors and readers alike.

Effective from 28 January 2025, the Online Journal of Research in Islamic Studies (RIS) has adopted updated International Standard Serial Numbers (ISSN). The current identifiers are ISSN: 3083-9270 and e-ISSN: 3083-9262. The previous e-ISSN (2289-6821) was used for the CD-ROM format.
