Abstract

The Bajau is the second largest ethnic group in Sabah. Majority of them are Muslims. They are rich in customs and practices of their own, which are known as `urf in Islamic jurisprudence. This research is focusing on the traditional ritual in the community of Bajau Semporna which is Magombo. Magombo’ is a practice of Bajau Semporna’s community to worship the spirits of their ancestors with the aim of mercy and prosperity of life. The main problem of this research is a community of Bajau Semporna believed that the practice is not a superstitious ritual because it is only a ritual that honors to the spirits of their ancestors. So, they want to preserve the culture and the magombo’ ritual. In regards to this, the objective of this research is to analyse the practice of magombo’ according to Bajau’s sociocultural perspective and also from Islamic perspectives. In addition to that, this qualitative research applies for literature review together with fieldwork in achieving its objectives. Data collection is done using methods which include documentation, interview as well as observation. The basic study found that the community of Bajau Semporna tend to preserve indigenous heritage especially the magombo’ practice to ensure the safety of younger generation in the future although it is contrary to Shariah.
